The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular and
established routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its scenic beauty, relatively
easier access, and established infrastructure, which includes huts for accommodation. Here’s
a typical 6-day Marangu Route itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Arrival: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
Overnight: Stay in Moshi for preparation.
Day 2: Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Morning: After breakfast, you will be driven to the Marangu Gate (about 1.5 hours from
Moshi).
Trek: Start your hike from Marangu Gate through the rainforest. This part of the route is lush
and vibrant, with diverse plant life and wildlife.
Trekking time: 3-4 hours (8 km).
Overnight: Stay in Mandara Hut. This is the first stop where you will get a good rest and have
dinner.
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Morning: After breakfast, continue your hike to Horombo Hut, passing through a transition
zone from the rainforest to moorland.
Trekking time: 5-6 hours (12 km).
Overnight: Stay at Horombo Hut. It’s a bigger hut with beautiful views of the surrounding
area, and a perfect spot to rest for the day.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
STAYING 2NIGHT FOR Acclimatization to Horombo
Morning: After breakfast, start the trek towards Kibo Hut. The terrain becomes more barren
and rugged as you ascend.
Trekking time: 5-6 hours (10 km).
Overnight: Stay at Kibo Hut, which is the last hut before the summit.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Horombo Hut
Midnight: Begin the summit attempt by leaving Kibo Hut around midnight for the final push to
the summit.
Summit: Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise (approximately 5-6 hours). Enjoy the breathtaking views
from the roof of Africa.
Descent: After taking photos and celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for rest
(approximately 5-6 hours).
Overnight: Stay at Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, return to Moshi
Morning: After breakfast, continue your descent to Marangu Gate.
Trekking time: 5-6 hours (18 km).
Arrival: You will reach the gate and sign out. Afterward, return to Moshi to relax and celebrate
your achievemen
