Mount Meru is a popular trekking destination, especially for climbers who want to experience
a challenging ascent before attempting the more famous Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also known
for being less crowded compared to Kilimanjaro.
Climbing Routes: The most commonly used route is the Meru Crater Route, which starts at
the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. It involves a multi-day trek with camping along the
way. The final ascent to the summit is a steep climb that o ers thrilling views.
Day 1: Arrival and Trek to Miriakamba Hut
Elevation Gain: 1,500 meters (4,921 feet)
Starting Point: Momella Gate (1,500 meters / 4,921 feet)
End Point: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters / 8,250 feet)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Morning: After arriving at Momella Gate, you will go through park registration and safety
briefings. A guide and porters will be assigned to assist you throughout the trek.
Afternoon: The first day’s trek is relatively moderate. You begin ascending through savannah
and forest areas, o ering opportunities to spot wildlife such as gira es, bu aloes, and
various monkeys. The route includes scenic views of Mount Kilimanjaro (on clear days).
End of Day: You’ll reach Miriakamba Hut, a cozy base camp surrounded by alpine meadows
and montane forests. The hut provides a resting place with shared facilities, including beds
and a dining area. Overnight stay here.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters (3,281 feet)
Starting Point: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters / 8,250 feet)
End Point: Saddle Hut (3,570 meters / 11,713 feet)
Duration: 4-6 hours
Morning: You’ll begin the day by climbing through cloud forests, where the air becomes
cooler, and the flora changes. The trail steadily climbs towards the Saddle, an area between
Mount Meru’s cone and the caldera rim.
Afternoon: As you ascend, you may experience alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias and
heathers. The trail o ers stunning views of the Mount Meru Crater, and the surrounding
landscape becomes more dramatic as you near the saddle.
End of Day: You will arrive at Saddle Hut, which is situated near the edge of the caldera. This
is the last stop before making the final ascent to the summit. It is a higher altitude, and
acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness, so a short rest before dinner is
recommended. Overnight stay here.
Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit and Return to Saddle Hut
Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) to the summit (4,566 meters / 14,980 feet)
Starting Point: Saddle Hut (3,570 meters / 11,713 feet)
End Point: Saddle Hut (3,570 meters / 11,713 feet)
Duration: 7-9 hours (round trip)
Early Morning: The summit day begins very early (around 2:00 AM) to reach the peak before
sunrise. The climb from Saddle Hut to the summit involves navigating steep and rocky terrain.
The final ascent is physically demanding but rewarding as you approach the summit.
Summit: The summit of Mount Meru is a rocky ridge with dramatic views of the crater below.
The view is breathtaking, especially at sunrise, and you can look down into the caldera and
across the surrounding valleys. It is also possible to see Mount Kilimanjaro to the northeast,
weather permitting.
Return: After reaching the summit, you will descend back to Saddle Hut. The descent can be
challenging due to the steepness, but it is a bit easier than the ascent. This part of the journey
gives you more time to appreciate the beauty of the landscape from di erent angles.
End of Day: Once you return to Saddle Hut, you can rest and recover. The guide and porters
will prepare a meal, and you will have the evening to relax. Overnight stay at Saddle Hut.
Day 4: Saddle Hut to Momella Gate and Departure
Elevation Loss: 1,500 meters (4,921 feet)
Starting Point: Saddle Hut (3,570 meters / 11,713 feet)
End Point: Momella Gate (1,500 meters / 4,921 feet)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Morning: After breakfast, begin the descent from Saddle Hut back down to Momella Gate.
This is a relatively easier day compared to the previous ones, as you lose altitude rather than
gain it.
Scenic Views: The route down passes through the same stunning landscapes as the previous
days, including forest, savannah, and alpine meadows. You may spot more wildlife as you
descend.
End of Day: Once you reach Momella Gate, you will complete your trek. Afterward, you can
either head back to Arusha or continue with other plans, such as a safari in nearby parks like
Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater.
Trekking Considerations for the 4-Day Itinerary:
Acclimatization: Mount Meru’s altitude can lead to altitude sickness. It is important to pace
yourself and take it slow, especially on the steeper sections. The 4-day itinerary provides
su cient time for acclimatization with overnight stays at increasing altitudes.
Weather: Weather conditions can be unpredictable, with cold nights at high altitudes and the
possibility of rain, particularly in the rainy seasons (March-May). Pack layers, a waterproof
jacket, and proper gear for varying weather conditions.
Fitness Level: A moderate level of fitness is required for this trek. Although it does not involve
technical climbing, the last stretch to the summit involves steep, rocky terrain, and good
physical preparation will help.
Guides and Porters: All climbers are required to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and
porters will carry the necessary gear, food, and camping supplies.
Wildlife: Expect to see wildlife in Arusha National Park, particularly on the lower slopes of the
mountain. However, it’s important to maintain a safe distance and not disturb the animals.
Safety: Always listen to your guide and follow their instructions. Be aware of the signs of
altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, naausea), and make sure to stay hydrated
